At the 2022 U.S. Trotting Association annual meeting in March, the USTA directors overwhelmingly voted to increase the fee for horse transfers by $5 starting on June 1, 2022, with all of the additional revenue earmarked to provide financial support for the Standardbred Transition Alliance.

“The fee increase for transfers is another example of the USTA’s support of aftercare for the horses that make harness racing possible,” said USTA Executive Vice President and CEO Mike Tanner. “It is critical for our industry to support the STA and this is an excellent way for USTA members to assist with that.”

“Developing a consistent, broad-based stream of financial support for the STA has been the board’s goal from the very beginning,” said STA President David Reid. “We greatly appreciate this new source of funding that should generate more than $100,000 annually to help us support accredited organizations providing essential aftercare for our Standardbreds.”

In 2021, there were 23,313 horse transfers, including 5,183 from claims made in races, which would have resulted in $116,565 for the STA if this program had been in place.

           Oxford, NY —

We are honored to be accredited by the Standardbred Transition Alliance (STA). We thank STA for recognizing our program and for their financial support.

We see this as validation that our non-profit is doing all it can to operate in a fiscally sound and transparent way. This should be the goal of every public charity, and having the chance to prove our merit by meeting the STA’s accreditation standards was one we gladly welcomed.

Having an accreditation program that inspects and monitors adoption programs is important to ensure horses are receiving exemplary care while being safely and professionally transitioned into new homes.

Not only does it give our directors, staff and volunteers the positive encouragement that we are adhering to best practices in every sector, it also gives our supporters confidence their money is being used in the most beneficial way to help establish a better racehorse aftercare network.

As we worked through the application we found the STA’s accreditation and inspection process to be clearly outlined in the application materials and direction was available when needed. The paperwork was labor intensive, as you’d expect with sharing all facets of your charitable business and horse management practices. While each program is different the document requirements remain essentially the same.

After the application was submitted there was a physical inspection of the horses in our care and the farm itself. Another component of the inspection was a review of the professional ethics in our organization displayed both generally and in our promotion and publicity efforts. We (PHSAP) feel strongly that the best way to showcase how wonderful our breed is and to attract quality adopters is in conducting ourselves with the utmost honesty. We pride ourselves on being straightforward, honest and always available to provide support services for our horses and their new families.

In closing, we are gratified that Purple Haze Standardbred Adoption Program has met all STA standards for accreditation and we look forward to renewing our application next year!

We invite anyone to come to the farm for a visit, or contact us with any donation questions or adoption inquiries.

           Laurelville, OH (March 1, 2022)

          – The Standardbred Transition Alliance (STA) has launched a new program to help ensure the safety of Standardbred horses that are retiring from racing. Called the Placement Liaison Program (PLP), this initiative is fully endorsed by the United States Trotting Association (USTA) and is designed to streamline the process of placing retiring racehorses into quality aftercare programs.

The process is simple: the racehorse owner completes and submits three forms, which can be found on the STA website. An STA Liaison processes the paperwork on behalf of the owner and becomes the first point of contact for the transition process. The Liaison reaches out to STA accredited aftercare organizations to determine which would be a good fit for the retiring racehorse. The aftercare organization then takes the retired racehorse into their care with all paperwork in place and the rehoming process begins immediately.

“We are very excited about this new program, which is huge for the future of Standardbreds,” says Don Marean, chairman of USTA District 9, director of the Maine Farm Bureau Horse Council and the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association; and vice chair of the University of Maine (Orono) Board of Agriculture. “Having a point person an owner can reach out to who can physically walk them through the transition from racing is imperative to keep Standardbreds from ending up in trouble or in a kill pen. By eliminating the possible middleman, retiring racehorses have a significantly better chance for a quality life after the track.”

Jennifer Daniels, administrator for the Standardbred Transition Alliance, held various roles with the USTA before transitioning into Standardbred aftercare in 2013. Having worked both in the front-facing side of the industry and in transitioning retired racehorses to a new career, she was uniquely positioned to help the STA identify both how to make the rehoming process easier and how to help ensure a retiring racehorse doesn’t end up in a potentially perilous situation.

“Our main priority is to make sure each horse has everything it needs to enter an adoption program ready to find its second career,” says Daniels. “In addressing that, we also designed a program that alleviates many of the time-consuming, administrative tasks accredited aftercare organizations must complete. Programs are often stretched thin by having to do everything from hands-on care to office work to fundraising efforts. The Placement Liaison Program will allow adoption programs to operate even more efficiently by preserving their time and energy for screening and interviewing adopters, training horses and conducting post adoption follow-ups. ”

“The STA looks forward to assisting the horses and our accredited aftercare organizations in truly changing the face of equine aftercare,” Daniels says.

During a board meeting of the Standardbred Transition Alliance on Thursday (Aug. 12), an agreement was reached with the U.S. Trotting Association for the STA to become the official aftercare partner of the USTA.

“Our entire board of directors appreciates the endorsement of the U.S. Trotting Association and the validation it provides for the Standardbred Transition Alliance within the harness racing industry and with all those who care so passionately about the aftercare of our Standardbreds,” said STA President David Reid. “We’re grateful for the expanded reach they have to assist us in delivering our message and the support of our fundraising efforts through the voluntary donation options they are providing to their members.

“Since the creation of the STA, the board has always believed that it would require a broad-based effort from within the industry to support it and this is a big step in the right direction.”

The U.S. Trotting Association announced Monday (Aug. 16) that online applications for membership renewals will include an option to make a donation to the Standardbred Transition Alliance. It can be made as either a part of the membership renewal application or as a stand-alone donation. A similar donation option will be added to new membership applications shortly.

The online form in USTA Online Services will include an option to make a minimum donation of $10 and a maximum of $500 in one-dollar increments, which is in addition to the current option to donate to the Harness Racing Museum. Printed forms will also include these same two options for donations.

The STA operates independently of the USTA, though the USTA will provide both promotional and operational support and will have an ex officio spot on the board.

The STA does not directly care for horses but accredits and provides some funding for groups that meet accreditation standards.

Funding is generated across the spectrum of the Standardbred industry, including regulatory agencies, horsemen’s groups, tracks, sales companies, farms, and individuals who participate as trainers, drivers, owners, and breeders.

The STA provides partial funding to groups serving Standardbreds, ensuring donor confidence by examining the equine care and business practices of groups applying for accreditation.

It is expected that the accreditation process will also assist groups in developing sustainable policies and programs.

Saturday’s Empire of Hope event at Hoosier Park important benefit for Standardbred Transition Alliance

Saturday evening (July 31), Harrah’s Hoosier Park will play host to the second annual Empire of Hope night. The purpose of the evening is to help raise awareness, and dollars, for racehorse aftercare. All funds raised tonight (July 30) and Saturday at Hoosier Park will benefit the Standardbred Transition Alliance (STA). Still in its infancy, the STA is slowly growing in the mission of assisting with the relocation, rehabilitation and repurpose of retired standardbreds. STA president David Reid said he is satisfied with the progress, but not content.

“We are in our second year of accrediting facilities. The mission is going steadily forward,” Reid said. “The placements for the first year were satisfying, but obviously we know we are a young organization. The main goal is that the heart is in the right spot for aftercare. I think the awareness level has increased. We are just continuing to grow at a slow pace, but at a steady pace.”

A non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, the STA was created with a mission to accredit, inspect and award grants to organizations that work to re-home or transition standardbreds once their careers are complete. Reid said that to date three organizations have been accredited. Jennifer Daniels, STA administrator, said that over the last year and a half, 138 standardbreds have received transition services from STA accredited aftercare organizations.

“I know that may sound small, but it is somewhere to start and build from. When you gauge success, sometimes you have to be realistic about it. It is going to be a steady, slow growth. Awareness is being raised, but it needs to be raised much more,” Reid said of the placements. “I think the industry has definitely embraced it, but I think we need to reach more tentacles of the industry. What people do like is the accreditation process adds validity and donor confidence. I think we need to continue to do that. I think the accreditation and oversight validates facilities, which makes the donors’ confidence even greater.”

Events such as Hoosier Park’s Empire of Hope are one of the vehicles that can be used to reach those tentacles of the industry. More importantly, it serves as a grassroots effort that is critically important to building STA awareness.

“This movement has to be grassroots. It’s nothing that can be handed down from on high. It has to happen at the track level. That’s where the community builds,” said Daniels, who joined STA in November 2019. “I just returned from The Meadows, where the MSOA put on a great charity event Wednesday night. The local events are more tangible. When you see or personally know the horses that are retiring, it becomes real. When you’re raising money at the local level, and you know that your contributions are helping horses that you see every day, that is tangible and real and that’s how the movement grows. It’s great to say that we’ve done this at a national level, made a secure collection point for donations, now we need to work to build the aftercare community at the track level.”

Daniels said that one of the unexpected outcomes of the accreditation process is the “bird’s eye” view afforded and seeing areas where the STA could be of greater service to industry organizations. She noted that in some instances, bottlenecks have been identified where the STA can partner with an organization to address ongoing challenges through grants or other means. A case in point centers around paperwork needed for a racehorse transitioning away from racing. This is an area where Daniels sees the STA playing a crucial role in the future, both in education and execution.

“The STA accredited aftercare organizations ask that a horse arrives with the USTA transfer of ownership, the pleasure horse registration, and Full Circle enrollment already completed. If that hasn’t happened, it really burdens a program to have to go and chase those things down, to ask for a coggins and a health certificate,” she said. “If those things are done by the owner or trainer before a horse is sent to a program, it lifts a huge administrative burden from these charity organizations that are often running on office volunteers. The STA is stepping into a more active role with that, owner education. A lot of people would do the right thing, in terms of providing a placement ready horse, with pleasure horse conversion and health paperwork in order, if they knew the steps to take. And if they knew there was a place to turn to ask some of these questions. What are best practices for transitioning a horse when they are done racing?”

Saturday’s Empire of Hope event will go a long way in creating awareness for aftercare and the STA-accredited organizations, but it will also generate needed funding. The first edition in 2019 brought in $32,000 for STA. Reid continues to beat the drum for ways to generate a more constant stream of funding that can be utilized. He is in favor of a small fractional fee for transactions, borrowing from what takes place in thoroughbred racing while not creating a significant financial burden.

“In the thoroughbred model, every time a breeder registers a foal, there is a certain amount of money earmarked to aftercare. I’ve always been a believer that if you are bringing an animal into this world, you bear some responsibility at a low, fractional cost basis,” Reid noted. “I think it’s the responsibility of the entire industry, of all participants, to participate and contribute toward aftercare. A catch driver, whether he has a million dollar year or a $100,000 year, it’s not that much that is going to change a person’s life. Everyone knows my feelings on that.”

While Reid pursues that avenue, Daniels said there are other areas that need to be explored further, including in-kind donations from industry participants.

“The harness community has big hearts and they like to give, but they like to give close to home,” she said. “That’s why the Empire of Hope event is so powerful. You really see horsemen coming together and that sense of community. They want to take care of their own.”

Since the STA launched three years ago, the mission has not changed. However, through accreditation and grant cycles, Daniels has witnessed how the organization can serve as a valuable resource, and she is excited for the opportunity.

“I’m not overwhelmed by it at all. I love it. I love that we have an organization now where you can point to the STA for transitioning best practices and advice. Before no one really had ownership of this area in its entirety, not the horseman’s groups, the USTA or the adoption programs. Everyone did a little, or a lot, but there were still gaps that really weren’t anyone’s job to do. But the STA is perfectly situated,” she said. “Again, with that bird’s eye view of what’s happening within the accredited programs, how the horses transition and how they are returned. We’ve got a great partnership with the USTA, and those gaps that we have been jointly able to identify, I think the STA is that missing link. It is the bridge to all the areas we couldn’t quite get access to before. I think it’s exciting.”

The U.S. Trotting Association announced Monday (May 24) that the organization will donate $40,000 and establish a new funding mechanism to assist the Standardbred Transition Alliance. The $40,000 will come from the USTA’s Support Our Standardbreds budget.

In their May 13 meeting, the USTA’s Executive Committee voted to make the contribution and establish a new, opt-in option for USTA members to donate to the STA, which will be included on all new and renewal membership applications.

“The $40,000 and the opportunity for our members to make voluntary donations through their membership applications reaffirms the USTA’s commitment to the Standardbred Transition Alliance,” said USTA Executive Vice President and CEO Mike Tanner, who initially proposed the establishment of the STA at the annual Board of Directors Meeting in March 2018.

“The STA accreditation process ensures that their approved horse rescue organizations are operated with a professional structure and are accountable for their treatment of the horses, which provides assurance to donors that their contributions will be used responsibly,” added Tanner.

“The more money that can be raised, the more of our retired racehorses can receive the type of aftercare they deserve when they are retired. But besides the donation, there are many other ways that the USTA can promote and support the STA; and we’re committed to doing that.”

The STA operates under the guidance of its Board of Directors and is completely independent of the USTA, who previously donated $75,000 in initial funding for the creation of the organization. David Reid serves as president and Jennifer Daniels is the STA administrator.

“The STA deeply appreciates the support of the USTA’s directors, staff and membership, particularly in developing this opportunity for members to easily and securely transmit their aftercare contributions as they’re submitting other USTA transactions,” said Daniels.

According to its website, “The mission of the Standardbred Transition Alliance (STA) is to inspect, accredit and award grants to approved organizations that acquire, rehabilitate, train and re-home Standardbred horses, using industry-wide funding. The STA is approved as a 501(c)(3) Internal Revenue approved charity and is also registered with the Ohio Secretary of State and Attorney General. IRS application for 501(c)(3) designation was filed in October of 2018 and approved in April of 2019.

           Monticello, NY —

Aid to the Standardbred Transition Alliance (STA) is coming from the North American Amateur Drivers Association (NAADA) in the form of a $15,000 contribution. Alan Schwartz and Joe Faraldo, who conduct the NAADA events at Monticello and Yonkers Raceways, respectively, collect the members’ entry fees for use as charitable contributions.

Recognizing the valuable work done by the STA, Schwartz and Faraldo selected the STA as the recipient of fees that have not yet been awarded.

“Since there are many, many entities administering horse welfare retirement programs there seemed to be a real need to have a central clearinghouse to make sure that funding is distributed to entities meeting established criteria,” said Schwartz. “We think STA is such a much-needed clearinghouse.”

Their website states that STA is a non-profit organization whose mission is to accredit, inspect and award grants to approved organizations that acquire, rehabilitate, train and re-home Standardbreds. Funding is generated across the spectrum of the Standardbred industry, including regulatory agencies, horsemen’s groups, tracks, sales companies, farms, and individuals who participate as trainers, drivers, owners, and breeders.

According to Faraldo, the U.S. Trotting Association’s chairman, the USTA provided seed money to help get STA off the ground and recently had discussions about providing additional funding as well as creating opportunities for members to opt in to making donations through certain business transactions with the USTA.

“The USTA can’t do it all, as this must be an industry-wide effort where costs are shared amongst all of us who have responsibility for one or more horses and can appreciate the magnitude of such an undertaking,” said Faraldo. “It is just too big for any one entity to properly fund. STA should be the vehicle through which contributions flow to those entities that earn accreditation to best ensure that the money to care for our horses is well spent.”

“The NAADA members are very proud of the work STA is doing as far as that accreditation, and wanted to help in our small way,” said NAADA member and USTA Director Joe Pennacchio. “We hope others will recognize the importance of STA’s work, as have we in the amateur ranks have done, and pitch in.”

            – The second session of the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale (Oct. 6) opened with the auction of a limited-edition Ernst Benz watch to benefit the Standardbred Transition Alliance. The watch, a Tim Tetrick Hall of Fame Series Chronoscope, the first of only 20 to be made, brought a cool $13,000 for retired racehorses. The winning bid came from Michelle and Al Crawford of Crawford Farms, well-known supporters of Standardbred aftercare.

Their partnership with Ernst Benz is very exciting. It’s great to see outside interest coming into our sport. Ernst Benz has a reputation for being first class – and that goes beyond their craftsmanship; it’s evident in the way they treat people and in their philanthropy.

Hall of Fame driver Tim Tetrick and his wife, Ashley, have donated the first of 20 Tim Tetrick-inspired timepieces created by Ernst Benz to be auctioned off at the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale in support of the Standardbred Transition Alliance. A portion of the sales of the other 19 watches will go directly to New Vocations Racehorse Adoption program.

The Standardbred Transition Alliance (STA) will receive the entire proceeds from the sale of a limited edition Tim Tetrick-inspired 47mm Chronograph Timepiece crafted by Ernst Benz.

Created to honor Tetrick’s 2020 induction into the Harness Racing Hall Fame, only 20 watches are being made in the series.

The man with a seemingly endless list of accomplishments, awards and accolades donated the first watch, a timepiece that will be auctioned off with the money raised going to the STA.

It will hit the auction block as ‘hip number’ 127 at the annual Lexington Select Yearling Sale in Lexington, KY on Oct. 6.

The remaining 19 HOF watches and the Tetrick-inspired Chronosport will be available for purchase October 2020 at ErnstBenz.com.

A large portion of those sales will be directed to the STA-accredited organization New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program.

The idea behind it all began in Scandinavia last December when Tetrick was theonly North American driver competing in the first ever Arctic Horse Race challenge.

“When we were in Finland in December, one of the things that I really recognized that was so different than the driving colony in the U.S. was the driving colony in Finland was predominantly partnered with large corporations,” said Ashley. “I got home and said to myself, ‘Maybe the sponsorship isn’t the right way to go, but maybe we should start with a partnership.’

“A gentleman by the name of Don Hawk, who has been a standardbred owner for over 40 years – he’s a good friend of ours – is a big NASCAR guy. I told Don about what was going on in Finland and what a great idea it is, and said we should do something here for charity. He called me up the next afternoon and told me about Ernst Benz, which is the face of NASCAR now. They do the customized watches that go with the charity cars, they do [NFL hall of fame quarterback] Dan Marino’s watches, [singer-songwriter] Mary J. Blige’s watches – he said that he’d give Ernst Benz a call. The next thing I know I’m chatting with Leonid Khankin, the CEO and creative director of Ernst Benz, about a contract to do a 20-watch series. I thought it was awesome and I couldn’t believe it.”

For the STA, whose mission is to inspect, accredit and award grants to approved aftercare organizations that acquire, rehabilitate, train and rehome standardbred horses, the Tetricks gesture is as impactful as it is impressive.

Even more so, said STA administrator Jennifer Daniels, considering the struggles charities are facing in the wake of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’ve always admired the way Ashley Tetrick jumps in to get a job done,” said Daniels. “She’s quick to identify problems, but when it’s time to do the work, she’s also the first rolling her sleeves up. Tim has that same attitude. He’s not talking about it… he’s just doing it. I point to the New Vocations patch he wears on his colors. He’s always raising awareness.

“The issue of how best to support our retiring racehorses is not a new one. The Tetricks have long understood that we need to build a solid infrastructure to carry out this mission. Despite what many think, rehoming horses is not simple or easy. We have programs that are doing the work – it’s time for us to support them.”

One of the sport’s all-time greats, Tetrick, who ranks third in all-time earnings with $223 million, hasn’t allowed a hectic schedule to make aftercare an afterthought.

In fact, it has become even more top of mind these days.

“I’ve always tried to give back to the horses after their racing careers are over,” said Tetrick, who has topped $10 million in purses each of the past 13 years (a record), and ranked among the top 10 drivers in wins for 15 consecutive years, beginning in 2005. “I’m happy to give back to these great horses, to be able to provide for them what they’ve provided for my family.

“I grew up around horses my whole life. This is my way to give back to some of the unfortunate horses, the ones that don’t have that happy home. We eat, breathe and work around horses. Ashley has barrel horses, I own some racehorses and have a couple of broodmares. My family farm back in Illinois, there are 30 horses turned out there. Some are older racehorses, some are broodmares – we’ve always had horses. They’ve always been like children to us.”

           Ashley agreed.

“We are big advocates of aftercare,” said Ashley. “We’re also huge fans of New Vocations and what they are able to do. It continues to blow me away. With the STA, it’s near and dear to both of us. Over the last 10 years, I’ve watched what the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has done and it’s brilliant. This STA is a great place for large donors to have peace of mind when they are making donations and knowing its going to a good place. The No. 1 thing for us is that we love horses, so it just makes it that much better. We truly believe in giving back to aftercare.”

Don’t expect that commitment to change.

Ashley said she is hopeful STA fundraisers become a staple at the Lexington Select Sale.

“When Leonid asked Tim if he wanted the first watch in the series, Tim felt it was more important that it went to charity. That’s when I thought it would be great to have something like this become an annual tradition at the Lexington Select Sale, that someone brings an item to the table to raise money for the STA, to support what they’re doing. I called David Reid, and he jumped right on the bandwagon. We’re so appreciative of that.”

As they are of their ability to help the sport’s driving forces.

For the reinsman with more than 11,700 career victories, the one who ranks eighth all time in the category, the significance of a racehorse doesn’t end after its last mile on the track.

“We thought this partnership with Ernst Benz would bring more awareness to the cause, and also enlighten others about the importance of aftercare. Anything Ashley and I can do to help these athletes, we want to do that.”

It’s something the Tetricks always have time for.

STA accreditation provides aftercare organizations with independent verification that their program is operating in the following ways:

Their program is fully functional and well established. They are demonstrating stability, financial and operational transparency, responsible use of resources, and are adhering to sound and ethical business practices.

They provide qualified and experienced horsemen, trainers, veterinarians and farriers to make sure each individual horse’s needs are being met while in their care.

They have well-developed screening policies and are ensuring proper placement of each horse in suitable homes with adopters that have the skill-set and resources to provide for a bright future.

They are providing each horse with a lifelong safety net, should they need assistance in transitioning again, and at any time. Their adoption policies clearly define all terms, restrictions, reporting, return and rehoming options.

They professionally and positively represent their organization, standardbred aftercare and the entire racing industry. They recognize the importance of upholding the image and integrity of both aftercare and racing and are working collaboratively in efforts to educate horsemen, the public, media, regulators, legislators and others on the importance of our work.

The STA is an industry-led charitable 501(c)(3) organization established in 2018 to advance the field of Standardbred aftercare. The STA mission is to inspect, accredit and award grants to approved organizations that acquire, rehabilitate, train and rehome Standardbred horses. This work is made possible through the generous financial contributions of the collective harness racing community and its participants.

Standardbred Transition Alliance Accredits First Organizations

The Standardbred Transition Alliance announced the completion of its inaugural accreditation and grant process on Tuesday (May 5).

The three aftercares accredited by the STA are: New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program with locations in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania; Racer Placers in Jefferson, Wisc.; and Sunshine Horses in Clay, N.Y.

With this major milestone, we usher in a new era of Standardbred aftercare in leading an industry-wide effort to build sustainable infrastructure and funding mechanisms to support Standardbreds as they transition into second careers and homes outside of racing.

The STA recognizes organization accreditation as the first step towards the aftercare sustainability they hope to achieve. By closely examining each applicant’s organizational management, business practices, and adoption policies/procedures, the STA is giving donors the confidence to make more impactful charitable contributions to STA-accredited aftercare groups.

“I could not be prouder of the collective efforts of the harness racing community in recognizing the need for a structured and nationally-supported approach to an aftercare program for our sport, establishing the STA as the umbrella organization, and making aftercare of the Standardbred racehorse a dedicated priority,” said prominent equine surgeon and racehorse welfare advocate Dr. Patty Hogan, one of three veterinarians on the STA Accreditation Committee.

“I’d like to express my gratitude to the board members that worked diligently to get this project off the ground,” said STA President David Reid, who operates Preferred Equine, the largest Standardbred sales agency in the industry. “This wouldn’t have been possible without the early support of U.S. Trotting Association leadership and that of other horsemen’s groups, like the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association.”

“We applaud the good work of our aftercare organizations. A critically evaluated area for all applicants was that of the horse care and training being provided. Successful programs are not only providing excellent care for the horses in their charge, they are also doing a wonderful job at promoting Standardbreds in new markets and are really focused on increasing their number of adoptions. They show a collaborative spirit and a desire to work with other organizations to accomplish their mission,” added STA Administrator Jennifer Daniels.

Accredited organizations have received an initial grant award and will be eligible for additional monies as they are made available throughout the year.

The next application window will open on July 1.

The COVID-19 Stimulus Bill included a Charitable Giving Incentive: Creates a new above-the-line deduction (universal or non-itemizer deduction that applies to all taxpayers) for total charitable contributions of up to $300. The incentive applies to cash contributions made in 2020 and can be claimed on tax forms next year. Section 2204. The law also lifts the existing cap on annual contributions for those who itemize, raising it from 60 percent of adjusted gross income to 100 percent. For corporations, the law raises the annual limit from 10 percent to 25 percent.

STA Director Don Marean to receive USHWA President’s Award

Monticello NY — Don Marean, one of the strongest advocates for harness racing in the state of Maine for going on three decades, and Adriano Sorella, an Ontario advertising executive who is also looking to put harness racing in a more positive light, have been selected for President’s Awards by Shawn Wiles, top officer of the United States Harness Racing Association, the sport’s leading media organization.

Marean owned a hardware and feed company which he sold to his employees, then with his wife Linda took up the operation of Lin-Don Farm Inc., a commercial breeding and owning establishment. As Marean’s understanding of the framework of the industry grew, he ran for the state House of Representatives in Maine, and has won election six times. He has been president and director of the Maine Standardbred Owners Association, and a director of the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association.

His service to harness racing also extends to the national and North American level. He is the vice-chairman of the United States Trotting Association and is district chairman for District 9 (New England). Marean’s service has previously been recognized with the Distinguished Service Award for the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association and with an Appreciation Award from Harness Horsemen International.

“Don serves as the vanguard of harness racing in the great state of Maine,” Wiles said in making the announcement. “He has fought long and hard in Maine politics for many years to protect the interests of our sport and its horsemen throughout the state.”

Sorella is a high-powered marketing executive who has enjoyed success at the uppermost levels of North American harness racing, starting with Little Brown Jug winner Vegas Vacation. His most recent success has been Jimmy Freight, who is going to stud in 2020 after winning $1.28 million, being a major factor in the Ontario Sire Stakes, and then progressing to high competitiveness against the fastest pacers in the sport.

Jimmy Freight also gives a good example of Sorella’s ability to cross-leverage to harness racing’s advantage. Sorella used Facebook and other cutting-edge technologies to create quite a Jimmy Freight fan club, with seasoned and new fans alike following the horse.

The humanitarian side of Sorella showed when he was one of the leaders after Classy Lane Stables suffered a horrendous fire in 2016, in which 43 horses perished, helping to raise funds for horsemen whose careers were literally wiped out by the devastation.

USHWA President Wiles notes: “Adriano’s skill set of being social media-savvy, combined with his promotional prowess and outside-the-box thinking, showcases our great sport in a refreshing and positive light, geared to the general audience and perhaps even more importantly showcasing the sport to our younger fan base.”

Marean and Sorella will be honored at USHWA’s annual Dan Patch Awards banquet, celebrating the best and brightest of harness racing in the past year. The banquet honoring the champions of 2019 will be held on Sunday (Feb. 23) at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, Fla., the climax of a weekend that also finds USHWA holding its annual national meetings. The Trotter of the Year, Pacer of the Year, and Horse of the Year will be revealed for the first time at the banquet.

Tickets for the Dan Patch Awards banquet are $180, with a filet mignon dinner featured; “post times” on Feb. 23 are cocktails at 5:30 p.m., with dinner to follow. Tickets, and other banquet-related information, can be obtained through Dinner Planning Committee Chair Judy Davis-Wilson, at

Hanover Shoe Farms Foundation Grants to Standardbred Transition Alliance

The Hanover Shoe Farms Foundation has made a grant of $50,000 to the Standardbred Transition Alliance (STA) to support their mission of accrediting and granting to programs assisting Standardbreds as they transition to new careers.

“This gift is meant to incentivize the STA’s establishment of advanced standards for transformative grant making,” said Russell Williams, president of the Foundation and president and chief executive officer of Hanover Shoe Farms. “Transformation will be necessary to give our industry an effective network of post-career facilities using best practices.”

“Hanover Shoe Farms has been a leader in the Standardbred industry since 1926,” said David Reid, president of the STA. “It is no surprise that the Hanover Shoe Farms Foundation recognizes the importance of caring for the cornerstone of our business -- the horses.

“We greatly appreciate Hanover’s faith in STA and the support of the flagship program for Standardbred aftercare with this donation. It is vitally important that our donors have confidence in the business practices of the organizations we accredit, and that funds raised are making a difference in future options for our racehorses.”

The STA, which was granted approval in April of this year by the Internal Revenue Service as a charitable nonprofit organization, is currently reviewing and inspecting six applicant agencies. The process will be complete in early 2020 and accredited groups will be eligible for grants from the STA.

Groups seeking accreditation have supplied detailed documentation of their financial, operational, and horse care policies and practices. Inspections will be conducted at each farm housing horses in the care of an applicant agency.

The Board of the Standardbred Transition Alliance is pleased to announce that Jennifer Daniels has been named its administrator.

Daniels, a seasoned Standardbred aftercare professional, comes to the position with considerable experience operating a Standardbred transitional training program at her own Laurel Haven Farms, in Ohio. She previously worked in the regulatory department of the United States Trotting Association. A graduate of Ohio State University, Daniels holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture/Animal Science.

“We are delighted to have the benefit of Jennifer’s significant expertise in both transitioning our horses to new careers and as a professional within our industry. She will be working closely with our board in accrediting the first group of programs serving our horses, with our inaugural grants going out early in 2020,” said STA President David Reid.

Formed in the fall of 2018 and granted 501(c)(3) status in April 2019, the primary mission of the STA is to inspect, accredit and award grants to approved organizations that acquire, rehabilitate, train and ‘re-home’ Standardbred horses, using industry-wide funding.

As administrator, Daniels will be responsible for representing the STA in a leadership role, focusing on facilitating the accreditation process, establishing industry partnerships, project planning and exploring further program developments to enhance greater breed marketability and increased visibility.

“I am excited to join the STA and help carry out its important mission,” said Daniels. “I look forward to working with the Board of Directors and the various stakeholders in Standardbred racing to showcase the transitioning of horses we care so deeply about.”

Caesars launches “Empires of Hope” to care for retired race horses

Anderson, IN — Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ: CZR), today announced the launch of Empire of Hope, a new program designed to help raise awareness and funding for the care of horses after their racing careers are over. Developed with support from accredited racehorse aftercare programs, Empire of Hope will directly assist efforts to relocate, rehabilitate and repurpose retired horses.

“Empire of Hope is a direct reflection of the appreciation and pride we have for the horses that participate in Caesars’ racing program,” said Rick Moore, Vice President and General Manager of Racing at Harrah’s Hoosier Park. “Our equine athletes are the stars of our sport and we want to ensure that when they retire, they are placed in productive and loving environments to live out a long and healthy life.”

Horses that compete at Caesars’ racing properties range in age from two through 14; they retire on their 15th birthday. It is estimated that more than 15,000 horses annually are placed in existing aftercare programs after their racing careers are complete. Funding to relocate, rehabilitate and repurpose these equine athletes can cost several thousand dollars per horse. Through Empire of Hope, Caesars will provide funding and support to accredited non-profit racehorse aftercare organizations, including Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and Standardbred Transition Alliance.

“Thanks to the support of our industry stakeholders, the TAA and our accredited organizations are making a difference in the lives of thousands of retired Thoroughbreds,” said TAA president Mike Meuser. “With the launch of the Empire of Hope program, Caesars is helping us make sure that these horses receive the specialized and dedicated care they need to live healthy, happy lives after they retire from racing.”

During their tenure at Caesars’ racing properties, the horses are cared for by multiple staff members on behalf of individual trainers and owners, who provide the utmost care through feeding programs, veterinary care, horseshoeing needs and other essential requirements for their overall physical condition. Individual trainers and owners make the decision on the next step for their horses after their racing careers are over and often reach out to aftercare programs as the best option for a second career.

“The Standardbred Transition Alliance (STA) is so pleased that Caesars has embraced this initiative of recognizing and bringing awareness to horses that are now moving into different careers after racing,” said David Reid, president of STA. “We are hopeful this will ignite more racing and casino companies like Caesars to see this example and follow suit in our joint effort as an industry to assist our equine athletes as they proceed into new careers after racing.

Empire of Hope will be launched at four of Caesars’ racing properties: Harrah’s Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, LA; Indiana Grand in Shelbyville, IN; Harrah’s Hoosier Park in Anderson, IN; and Harrah’s Philadelphia. With a goal to raise $30,000, Empire of Hope activities will range from food and drink specials to entertainment and promotional activities. Each property has designed numerous ways to accept donations and raise funds during the weekend of Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21, 2019.

The USTA Board of Directors in March directed Chief Executive Officer Mike Tanner, with assistance from a steering committee comprised of Directors Don Marean, Jacqueline Ingrassia and Fred Nichols, to form the group. The STA will not directly care for horses, but will accredit and provide some funding for groups that meet accreditation standards. It will be modeled after the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, which provides financial assistance to about 60 groups annually.

“It is past time that we have a pervasive and proportional system to provide some support to groups helping our horses when they are no longer viable on the racetrack or as bloodstock,” said USTA President Russell Williams. “We have many horse owners that provide for their horses for all of their lives, but that is not an option for every person or every horse. We owe the horses that provide our living and enjoyment a coordinated effort to give them a secure future off the track. The STA will support that goal.”

The STA Board will convene for the first time in early November. The USTA Executive Committee is expected to consider and vote on actions to provide some funding for them at their November meeting. For questions and comments about the STA, email

          Columbus, OH

--- Mike Tanner, USTA Executive Vice President and CEO, unveiled a proposal for a Standardbred Transition Alliance (STA) at the general session of the USTA Board of Directors annual meeting Sunday (March 11) at the Hilton-Easton.

In his address to the board, Tanner proposed the creation of the STA, which would be an industry-wide group that would, according to its mission, “accredit, inspect, and award grants to approved organizations that acquire, rehabilitate, train and re-home Standardbreds, using industry funding.”

“In October, [USTA Director of Registry and Member Services] TC Lane and I attended a meeting of key industry stakeholders at the Red Mile to discuss Standardbred aftercare,” Tanner said. “The meeting was borne out of frustration concerning the plight of a Standardbred named Killean Cut Kid, who was found in poor condition in a sales pen in Louisiana.

"The case had drawn particular attention through social media, and because of many, both within and outside harness racing, who believed that not only had Killen Cut Kid’s owners let him down, but that the industry had, as well.”

The STA would be an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) that would be governed by an independent board of directors composed of key industry stakeholders, and including at least one USTA director and a designated USTA representative.

“It would solicit and raise money from across the industry, which would then be distributed to accredited Standardbred rescues that have undergone a thorough application and inspection process,” said Tanner.

In his address, President Russell Williams updated the board on working committees within the board, including the creation of the USTA Center for Innovation committee, which will, according to its mission, “lead innovation efforts that will help harness racing adapt and thrive in a technologically empowered world;” and the board protocol committee—which will look to develop a USTA Director Handbook and define the fiduciary duty that each director owes to his or her member constituents.

The board sat the following new members at this year’s session: David Siegel (District 3), Bruce Alexander (District 4B), Dein Spriggs (District 6), Kevin Decker (District 7), Corey Callahan (District 11) and Peter Koch (District 12).

The following officers were unanimously re-elected to their positions: Chairman Ivan Axelrod (District 3), Vice Chairman Don Marean (District 9), Treasurer Richard Brandt Jr. (District 1), and Corporate Secretary Sally Stauffer. President Russell Williams (District 7) is serving the remainder of former President Phil Langley’s term, which will come to an end in 2019.

The keynote speaker for the general session was Mary Byers, co-author of "Race for Relevance: Five Radical Changes for Associations." Byers, an expert on best practices for associations, had the directors break up into small groups and discuss opportunities for growth at the USTA and what an ideal USTA and its board would look like.

“You can have conversations that don’t lead to decisions,” she said. “It’s OK. Conversations aren’t dangerous. Not having conversations is dangerous.”

At the awards luncheon, 20-year service awards were presented to Robert Yohn (District 4B), Bruce Tubin (District 8), and Russell MacKinnon (District 11).

President’s Awards were given Skip Hoovler (District 1) and USTA CFO Dennis Fisher for their work in the USTA defined benefit plan buyout. Dan Ater (District 1) also received a President’s Award.

“If any of you have a son or daughter in the industry, and you can give them one piece of advice, it should be to be more like this guy,” Williams said when presenting to Ater.
